Barltrop, Dale

Violinist from Brisbane, Australia, who started playing piano and violin at seven years of age.  When he reached Grade Seven, he became the leader of the junior high school orchestra.  At twelve years of age, he became a member of the Queensland Youth Orchestra, and was concertmaster for them as well as for the Australian Youth Orchestra.  He attended Ferny Grove State High School and was the director of its chamber orchestra and string ensemble, as well as Music Captain.  At fifteen years of age, he debuted as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.  Two of his early teachers were Marcia Cox and Elizabeth Morgan.

In 1998, he emigrated to the U.S. and enrolled in the University of Maryland where he studied with Gerald Fischbach.  Here he co-founded the Philharmonia Ensemble, which he directed and managed from 2000 to 2002.  He furthered his education under the tutelage of William Preucil at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

In 2003, he joined the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as their principal second violin, a post he also held with the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra from 2005.

He gave a lecture-recital of “Ricononscenza per Goffredo Petrassi” by Elliott Carter with commentator Michael Cherlin at the University of Minnesota School of Music on 2nd March 2006.

On 3rd December 2008, the SPCO toured Scandinavia and one of their stops was a the Copenhagen Music Conservatory, where they performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7”.

He became the concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 2009.  Other groups with whom he has worked include the Akron Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Bloomington Symphony, the Maryland Chamber Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Music on Main All-Star Band, the Queensland Orchestra, the Queensland Pops Orchestra, and the University of Maryland Symphony.

On 26th September 2009, he and violist Sabina Thatcher were guest soloists at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Their program included “A Lark Ascending” by Ralph Vaughan Williams and “Viola Concerto” by Sally Beamish.

He made his debut as a soloist with the VSO at the Orpheum Theatre on 23rd October 2010, when he interpreted Robert Schumann’s “Violin Concerto”.

On 1st November 2011, he and cellist Olivia Blander, violinist Jason Ho and violist Reg Quiring gave a recital at the cellar that comprised “Allaqi” by Marcus Goddard, “Duo” by Erwin Schulhoff, “The Light Guitar” by Patrick Zimmerli, “Sonatina, Op. 221” by Darius Milhaud and “Wrong Mountain Stomp” by John Mackey.

He returned to his homeland for a concert at the Australian National Academy of Music on 5th April 2012, when he directed the ANAM Orchestra in a performance of “Mystere de l’instant” by Henri Dutilleux, “Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune” by Claude Debussy, “Symphony in C” by Georges Bizet and “Le tombeau de Couperin” by Maurice Ravel.

In the field of music education, he has taught at ANAM, the National Orchestral Institute, the University of British Columbia, and the VSO School of Music.
