Howard, Steve (1951-Present)

He is a multi-instrumentalist, noted for his ability on the trumpet and flugelhorn, born in Dallas, Texas, to a musical family where his father played guitar and piano and took him on trips to New Orleans to hear jazz and Dixieland music.

He first played trumpet as a fourth grader in the school band and in high school was chosen for the Texas all-state high school band followed by being awarded a music scholarship in Arkansas at the Henderson State College.  Two years later he moved to the North Texas State University’s jazz school.

After completing his studies he moved to New Orleans where he accepted an invitation from Allen Toussaint to work in his studio as lead trumpet and appeared on his Southern Nights album.  He also worked with Patti LaBelle on her Nightbirds and the ensuing hit single “Lady Marmalade”.

In 1975 he was approached by Paul McCartney and asked to join Wings.  He accepted and spent the next five years touring and recording as a member of the horn section.

Together with the saxophonist Jon Smith, he formed the duo Legendary White Trash Horns who have performed with artists that include the Junior Wells Bands and the Edgar Winter Band.  After working with countless other artists he later toured with Steve Cropper and “Blue” Lou Marineri in the Original Blues Brothers Band and became a member of The N’Awlins Gumbo Kings.

Recording numerous albums in many genres of music, he has written horn arrangements for Albert Collins among others.  He has recently performed in concert with the other members of the Wings horn section, Denny Laine and The Beatles tribute band American English.
