Markson, Virginia (1944/5-Present)

She is a flautist, piccolo player and teacher born Virginia Scheyer to a family where her father was the founder of the Arts Department at Wayne State University and her mother was a talented keyboard player who became the president of one of the music societies based in Detroit.

She took her studies at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York, before leaving to get married.  She continued her career as a private flute teacher and performed in CBC concerts as well as bringing up two daughters who both later became professional woodwind musicians in Sweden.

She later re-married the cellist and conductor David Miller and their son Benjamin Miller became a bass guitarist.  She went on to become a flautist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and remained with them for 19 years, appearing in numerous concerts and on many recordings.  She has also performed with the Amati String Quartet.

In her work as an orchestral and studio musician she has appeared on albums that include Adeste Fidelis by Gino & Louis Quillico, Judy Loman and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra & Children’s Chorus, Mostly Railroad Music by Eldon Rathburn, With This Kiss by Amy Sky, My Heart Soars by the Toronto Children’s Chorus, For the Birds by Laurence Trott, Orchestra by Peter Ustinov and Beethoven Lives Upstairs, Mozart’s Magic Fantasy and Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery in the Classical Kids series.
