He is a percussionist and teacher who became a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London in 1979 and now presents the very successful themed family concerts which are also performed with other orchestras and ensembles such as the Britten Sinfonia, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Musiquest and the Southbank Sinfonia.
He is the founder of the internationally popular The Elastic Orchestra which has its 15 member micro-orchestra giving performances that provide entertainment to children. He is also a co-founder of The Wallace Collection.
He can be heard on the recordings Les Miserables (Relatively Complete Symphonic Recordings)by The Philharmonia, Chanson: The Space In Between by Barb Jungr and Best Loved Hymns by The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge among others and seen on the Philharmonia’s film Players on Salonen.
In the field of musical education he became the head of Percussion at the Royal College of Music in 1986 and remained in that position until 2007. He has since been one of the devisers of the percussion examination syllabus for the Association Board of the Royal Schools of Music and been a diploma examiner. He has also been resident at the Purcell School as its Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion, on the faculty of the English Brass Academy, held many masterclasses on a national and international level and been the director of the Royal Albert Hall’s educational chamber group known as Alberts Band.
