Kaplan, Lawrence

Flautist and piccolo player who acquired his performance certificate at the Academie Internationale in France.

Groups with whom he has performed include the American Ballet Theatre, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Southwest Chamber Music, the Southwest Chamber Orchestra, and the Toyon Woodwind Quintet.

On 15th October 1989, the Toyon Woodwind Quintet performed French music from the 19th and 20th centuries in the Fine Arts Concert Hall at the University of California, Irvine.

Lawrence and drummer Jack Dilanni, pianist Rick Rowley and bassist Nicolas Tsolainosinterpreted Claude Bolling’s “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano” at the 18th Annual Sunflower Music Festival in White Concert Hall on 18th June 2004.

On 19th November 2005, Southwest Chamber Music presented Johannes Brahms’ “Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B minor, Op. 115”, Walter Piston’s “Quintet for Flute and Strings” and Kaija Saariaho’s “Six Japanese Gardens” at the Norton Simon Museum Theatre in Pasadena, California.

They offered up Luciano Berio’s “Folk Songs”, Claude Debussy’s “Syrinx” and Lou Harrison’s “Suite for Cello and Harp” at Huntington Library on 20th July 2007.

On 3rd February 2008, Lawrence and pianist Ming Tsu appeared at Boston Court in Pasadenawhere they sandwiched Theo Musgrave’s “Piccolo Play” in between flute sonatas by Sergei Prokofiev and Franz Schubert.

He was one of the musicians who accompanied the Los Angeles Master Chorale in the world premiere of Chinary Ung’s “SPIRAL XII: Space Between Heaven and Earth” at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, on 9th November 2008.

On 18th April 2009, he and harpsichordist Patricia Mabee were the featured soloists when Southwest Chamber Music took the stage at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.  Their program comprised Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Trio Sonata in G major, BWV 1038”, Toru Takemitsu’s “Air for Flute Solo”, “Rain Dreaming for Harpsichord” and “Rocking Mirror Daybreak”, and Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Suite in A minor, TWV55: A2”.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic teamed up with conductor Gustavo Dudamel and mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor at Barbican Hall on 27th January 2011.  The evening opened with “Slonimsky’s Earbox” by John Adams and concluded with a pair of symphonies: “Symphony No. 1” (“Jeremiah”) by Leonard Bernstein and “Symphony No. 7” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

On 28th January 2011, they were back at Barbican Hall with the same conductor in a performance of “Symphony No. 9” by Gustav Mahler.

The Southwest Chamber Orchestra appeared at the Hanoi Opera House on 22nd April 2012.  They gave the Asian premiere of “On Conversing with Paradise” by Elliott Carter and the world premieres of “Pho” by Vu Nhat Tan, “Still Distant, Still Here” by Kurt Rohde, “Thang Long” by Pham Minh Thanh and “Within Earth, Wood Grows” by Alexandra du Bois. The concert was capped off with Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland.

Recordings on which Lawrence appears include the complete chamber music of Carlos Chavez on the Cambria label, Illuminations by Josh Groban and the soundtracks of Blade II and Robots.

In the field of music education, he has served as a lecturer in flute at the aforementioned University of California, Irvine.
