Bassoonist, conductor and music director who was voted one of the BBC Young Musicians of the Year in 1978.

His credits in the 1990s included: The Best of the Complete Mozart Edition; Franz Berwald: Grand Septet; Quartet for piano and wind; Piano Trio No. 2; Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 6 & 105; Cello Concerto in D; Ligeti: Chamber Music; Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Mozart: Chamber Music with Piano; Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 17, KV 453; Piano Quintet KV 452; Mozart: Rarities and Surprises; Mozart: Three Wind Concertos; Schubert: Octet; and, The Wind Soloists of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, whom he co-founded.
In 2000, he made his conducting debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London at the Rimini Festival. He has also conducted A Soldier’s Tale by Igor Stravinsky, including a 2004 production with Jeremy Irons, and a 2006 production with the backing of Kevin Spacey, at the Old Vic.
Other groups he has conducted include the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the City of London Sinfonia, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Johannesburg Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the Nordic Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa Japan, the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.
He has served as principal conductor of Orchestra Citta Aperta, L’Quila, Italy, principal bassoon of Endymion, the ECO and the Philharmonia, and music director of The Motion Group. Other groups with whom he has worked include the Gaudier Ensemble and the London Winds.
His recording credits as a conductor include Spohr: Clarinet Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 and Spohr: Clarinet Concertos Nos. 3 & 4. As a bassoonist, he can be heard on a number of CDs in the new millennium: Beethoven: Serenade, Op. 25; Quintet for piano & winds, Op. 16; Clarinet Trio, Op. 11; Benjamin Britten Collector’s Edition; Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi: Orchestral Works; Mozart Box Set; Mozart: Oboe Concerto K. 314; Sinfonia Concertante K. 297b; Clarinet Concerto K. 622; Schubert: Octet; Shepherd on the Rock; and, Shostakovich: Piano Quintet; Ustvolskaya: Octet; Composition No. 3; Symphony No. 5.
In the field of music education, he has served as professor of conducting at the Royal College of Music and the Umbria International Summer Music Academy.
