Powell, Michael

He is a trombonist who performs as a free-lance musician, soloist and as part of orchestras and ensembles.

He was a principal trombonist with the Kansas City Philharmonic from 1978 to 1982 and in 1983 he became a member of the American Brass Quintet, who he is still currently with.

He has regularly performed with artists and groups that include P.D.Q. Bach, The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Speculum Musicae and The Zankel Band and at the Hampshire and Aspen Music Festivals, as well as on Broadway, radio and TV.

Accompanying the composer he performed the premiere of Sonata for Trombone and Piano with Ewan Ewazen.  As a teacher he is on the faculties of the Aspen Music School, The Juilliard School, Mason Gross School for the Arts and SUNY as well as giving many national and international masterclasses.
