Prime, Dennis

Clarinetist from Rosetown, Saskatchewan, who was one of the first conductors of the Grant MacEwan Community College Wind Ensemble, which became The New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia.  For more than two decades, he performed with and conducted the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

In 1983, he took over for Malcolm Smith as the Director of the Alberta College Conservatory of Music.  He conducted the premiere of Malcolm Forsyth’s “Kaleidoscope” on 28th October 1989 at the Convention Centre in Edmonton.  In 1997, he appeared on the Edmonton Wind Ensemble’s album, Snake Fence Country.

His musical adventures have taken him all over the globe, as in 2007 when he taught master classes in Hong Kong, Korea, and Tokyo.  Back home, he started up the Edmonton CantandoFestival, an annual non-competitive musical event that takes place at the Winspear Centre for Music.

In 2009, he was on another CD, Northern Arch/Arc du Nord, an all-Albertan affair that featured music dedicated to him, “aa69/coloratura for Dennis Prime, thirteen mini-pieces for basset-horn alone”.
