Arditti, Irvine (8th February 1953-Present)

He is a violinist born in London, England. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and in 1974 he formed the Arditti Quartet .

From 1976-1980 he was a member of the London Symphony Orchestra , becoming its co-concertmaster after two years. As the success of the Arditti Quartet grew he left the LSO in order to devote more time to them and since then they have recorded over 150 CDs and performed many premieres.

As a soloist he has made recordings of many solo violin works including his prizewinning La Lontananza by Nono and the premiere of Body Electric which is a work for electric violin by Luca Francesconi. He has performed with many international orchestras including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw, Berlin Radio Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic and the London and Oslo Sinfoniettas.

Recognised for his contribution to music the Royal Swedish Academy of Music appointed him their foreign member in 2009 and 5 years later, in 2014, the University of Huddersfield awarded him an honorary doctorate.
