Barnwell, Carl

He is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who was a member of the group Harsh Reality in the late 1960s and became a member of Matthews’ Southern Comfort in 1969/70. Writing and co-writing many of their songs, he remained with them during the years with Iain Matthews and after he had left, when they became known as simply Southern Comfort.

He has appeared on many recordings through the course of his career including the 1970 UK hit single ” Woodstock” as well as the albums Heaven and Hell by Harsh Reality, Second Spring and Later That Same Year by Matthews’ Southern Comfort and Frog City, Southern Comfort, Stir Don’t Shake and the compilation Distilled by Southern Comfort.

After Southern Comfort disbanded in 1972 Carl went on to form his own band and also worked with artists such as The Renegades with Luke Guy Reed. In 1977 he appeared on the Val Doonican Show with fellow Matthews’ Southern Comfort member Keith Nelson and The Mansells.
