Blythe, Ellen (January 27, 1982-Present)

She is a violist born in London who attended Kings College and the Royal Academy of Music and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Music in 2004 and 2006, respectively.

In 2007, she joined the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and the Southbank Sinfonia.  Other groups with whom she has worked include the Endellion Festival Orchestra, the Kentish Opera, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lumi String Quartet, Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, the Presteigne Festival Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ellen and violinist Catherine Lindley performed at Pinner Parish Church in Pinner, Middlesex, on 17th May 2009.  Their program consisted of “Passacaglia” by George Frideric Handel, “3 Madrigals for Violin and Viola” by Bohuslav Martinu, “Duo for violin and viola in G, K. 423” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and “Duo for violin & viola” by Heitor Villa-Lobos.  On 17th June 2009, they entertained at St. Sepulchre-without-Newgate on the Holburn Viaduct.

The Philharmonia teamed up with pianist Simon Trpceski on 30th November 2009 for Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23”, sandwiched between Zoltan Kodaly’s “Danses de Galanta” and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

On 25th March 2010, they performed a Beethoven double-header of “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major”, with Joshua Bell, and “Symphony No. 3 in E flat major” (“Eroica”) at Grand Auditorium.

They were joined by Midori on 15th December 2010 at Barbican Hall for Max Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No. 1”, Gyorgy Ligeti’s “Concert Romanesc”, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

On 11th January 2011, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted his own “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” with soloist Leila Josefowicz.  The concert was rounded out by Bela Bartok’s “Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sz 106” and Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” and “Ma mere l’Oye (suite)”.

Murray Perahia was the featured soloist when they performed Robert Schumann’s “Piano Concerto”, followed by Anton Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 4” (“Romantic”) on 14th and 16th June 2011.

In 2014 she performed on the James Newton Howard soundtrack for the film Nightcrawler.
