Brenner, Roger (1936-2007)

He was an English trombone and sackbut player and teacher who was active in the English music industry for several decades.

In 1966 he premiered Benjamin Britten’s “The Burning Fiery Furnace” and engaged in several pieces of correspondence with him in discussion of the way it was to be performed.

In the 1970s he became a member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and stayed with them into the 1980s, appearing on recordings that include Lollipops, Renaissance Brass, Eine Kleine Brass Musik, The 20^th Century Album, and on their theme song for the UK Comedy Series Bless Me Father. He has also been part of the London Symphony Orchestra and featured on their soundtrack for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and on their Frank Zappa Vols. I and II.

Appearing with the English Chamber Orchestra through the ’80s and the ’90s he featured on three albums of works by the composer Anton Bruckner and reaching into the world of popular music he recorded with Shirley Collins, Spiritualized, and on Sir Cliff Richard’s album Now You See Me, Now You Don’t.

He died after a short illness in 2007.
