Cheng, Angela

She is a classical pianist and teacher born in Hong Kong and later moving to Canada in the early 1970s. She first learnt to play the piano when she was three years old, being taught by her mother and then her aunt, who was a professional piano teacher.  She studied at the Juilliard School and Indiana University.

She has played as a soloist and with many chamber ensembles, and has performed with orchestras and ensembles that include the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra , the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Takacs and the Vogler and Colorado Quartets.

As a soloist she has appeared with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the St. Louis Symphony, the Utah Symphony , the Israel Philharmonic and nearly every major orchestra in Canada.

As the recipient of many first prizes in competitions, she has been a 1986 Gold Medal Winner at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition and a winner of the Montreal International Piano Competition. She has also received a Medal of Excellence at the Salzburg Mozarteum and a Career Development Grant from the Canadian Council.

As a teacher she has given many masterclasses all over the world, been on the faculty of the University of Colorado and she is currently an Associate Professor of Piano at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
