Clark, Robin (1949/50-Present)

She is a singer and actress born in New York whose father was the jazz drummer Bill Clark.

She began her musical career in Listen My Brother, formed in the Apollo Theater, New York, where the other vocalists were Luther Vandross and Fonzi Thornton and the founder of the group, Carlos Alomar , who she would later marry.

She has since worked in many areas of the entertainment industry such as being a pit singer on the Broadway production of The Wiz, working as a backing vocalist and session singer for literally hundreds of artists, touring with David Bowie and Simple Minds among others, singing on several movie soundtracks, appearing in the movie Keeping the Faith and on several television programmes including Bronk!, Emergency!, The Conan O’Brien Show and Sesame Street. She has also appeared on two Billboard chart No. 1 singles; “Dance, Dance, Dance” with Chic and “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” with Simple Minds.  She also released her solo album Surrender in 1984.

Other artists she has appeared with include Beyonce, Blur, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan , Debbie Gibson, Michael Jackson, Moby, The Scissor Sisters, Bonny Tyler, The Weather Girls and many more. The numerous albums she has appeared on include her own Surrender, 11 albums with Luther Vandross such as This is Christmas, Love Luther and Songs, Live in the City of Light by Simple Minds, Young Americans, Changes and Never Let Me Down by David Bowie, Long Hard Look by Lou Gramm, In Your Eyes by George Benson, Ringo the 4th by Ringo Starr , Your Filthy Little Mouth by David Lee Roth, Fires of Eden by Judy Collins, Back to Back by The Brecker Brothers Band, Live! The Loom’s Desire by Laura Nyro , You’ve Got to Believe in Something by The Spin Doctors, Dance, Dance, Dance: The Best of Chic by Chic, Romancing the ’60s by Frankie Valli and the soundtracks of Feeling Minnesota, Anastasia, Aladdin and Tarzan.

She appeared in the documentary David Bowie’s 5 Years broadcast by the BBC in 2013 and also the Academy Award winning Twenty Feet From Stardom which focussed on backing singers.  David Bowie Sound and Vision was a further documentary she appeared in.  She later worked on Alicia Keys’ 2016 album.

Her daughter with Carlos Alomar is the successful singer-songwriter Lea-Lorien.
