Downie, Tyrone (20th May 1956-5th November 2022)

He was a keyboardist, harmonica player, singer-songwriter and producer also known as “Organ D.” born in Jamaica who started performing with bands from the time he was 13 years old.

He studied at a music conservatory and was often heard singing lead with the Kingston College Chapel Choir and from 1973 he became the keyboardist and a co-producer with Bob Marley & The Wailers.

Through the course of his performing career he played, recorded and/or toured with reggae acts such as The Abyssinians, Black Uhuru, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff, Rupie Edwards, Gregory Isaacs, Ziggy Marley, Junior Marvin, The Meditations, Ernest Ranglin, Max Romeo, Sly & Robbie, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh, The Wailers Band and Rick Wakeman along with many others.

In the movies his song “Tumblin’ Down” was featured in 1989.s Slaves of New York and he wrote “House” and produced the soundtrack for The Mighty Quinn also in 1989.

Around 1996 he settled in France and left the performing and touring to concentrate on the production side of things in France as well as in his native Jamaica.  He released his solo album Organ-D in 2001 and produced an album by Tikeh Jah Fakoly from the Ivory Coast that received a Victoires de la Musique award nomination.

He died in hospital in Kingston, Jamaica in November 2022.  He was 66 years old.
