Drake, Julius (5th April 1959-Present)

He is a pianist born in London, England.  He studied the piano from the age of seven and, after graduating, built his career as an acclaimed chamber musician who accompanies many of the world’s leading instrumentalists and vocalists.

Known throughout the world he has appeared in numerous concerts and music festivals and appeared at some of the famed venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Tanglewood Festival, the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall in London and the Concertgebuow in Amsterdam.

Often working as a duo with the oboist Nicholas Daniel , they have been praised for their work with The Independent newspaper describing their work as “vital, thoughtful and confirmed in musical integrity of the highest order.”

He was the Director of the Perth International Chamber Music in Australia, the Musical Director of the touring production of Diary of One Who Vanished by Janacek, had his own series of song recitals known has Julius Drake and Friends performed in London, and been a jurist at the Leeds International Piano Competition.

Having made numerous recordings he has won a Gramophone Award and an Edison Award for albums made with the tenor Ian Bostridge.  In 2009 he was the artists director of Leeds Lieder and from 2009 to 2011 he was the director of the Machyblleth Festival.

As a teacher he has given many masterclasses in Oxford and throughout Europe.
