Flowers, David (10 December 1935-28 January 2005)

Trumpeter from Steubenville, Ohio, who attended the Catholic University of America and the University of Michigan and served in the Marines for four years as a Gunnery Sergeant. He graduated with Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees.

In 1964, he joined the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. and remained with them for forty-one years. Other groups with whom he performed comprise the Choral Arts Society, the Master Chorale of Washington Ensemble, and the Washington Ballet.

The NSO performed at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on 12^th December 2001 with the Washington Bach Consort Chorus in a concert of Arcangelo Corelli’s “Concerto Grosso in G minor, Op. 6, No. 8” (“Christmas Concerto”), George Frideric Handel’s “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” from Solomon, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, and Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Concerto in D major for Three Trumpets, Timpani, Strings and Cembalo”.

He appeared on the recordings, The American Brass Band Journal and Light’s Glittering Morn: A Musical Celebration.

In the field of musical education, he taught at his alma mater as well as American University and George Mason University and gave private lessons. His students included Michael Arrington, John Brodie, Blakely Carroll, Timothy A. Dickson, Kim Dunnick, Lawrence David Eden, Donald Goodness, Steven Mauk, Lawerence Oates, Gregory Pascuzzi, Robert Stibler, and David Williams.

David Flowers passed away in Arlington, Virginia, on 28^th January 2005.
