He is a keyboard player born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England who started in music as a member of the band The Unknowns. He followed that by replacing Alan Price as the keyboard player for The Animals for a short period until Dave Rowberry joined them.
He played for Pete Frampton’s Camel and around the same time formed the band The Chosen Few.
From the mid-1970s he was an original member of the band Ian Dury and the Blockheads who had hits with songs including “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” and “Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3 “.
Other artists he has recorded and performed with are Paul McCartney , Annie Lennox and Robbie Williams, and he appeared live and on two albums with The Clash.
His music has appeared in the film After Midnight, on Broadway in Serious Money and as a singer he appeared uncredited in Get Carter. He co-wrote the music for the stage show Apples with Ian Dury at the request of theatre director Max-Stafford Clark.
Currently he is playing with The Blockheads as well as with The Animals and Friends.
