Genensky, Marsha

She is a singer, arranger, music director, researcher and teacher who was raised in California in the Santa Monica mountains’ foothills.

Her further education too her to Scripps College to earn a degree in music and folklore and she followed that by enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania where she studied for a degree in folklore and folklife.

When she started singing she concentrated on traditional folk music but her attention moved to music of renaissance and medieval times and this led her to New York where she became a co-founder of the a-cappella ensemble Anonymous 4 .

Aside from singing and recording with the group, she also acts as a history and language researcher and adapter for the material they perform at their concerts. In her role as a music director she has worked with Anonymous 4 in that capacity on their albums American Angels and Gloryland.

The albums she has appeared on are many and include all of the Anonymous 4 recordings, many of which have won awards and appeared on the classical album charts. She has also featured on Generation Nation by Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings and the original 2006 soundtrack of Work and the Glory: American Zion.

In 2004 she returned to her native California and took on the role as an Assistant Professor at Stanford University where she taught the history of medieval music and form an vocal ensemble. She also attended as a visiting scholar there. She gives many workshops on sacred and secular songs in the Bay Area and is still working with Anonymous 4 on their recent projects.
