Grady, John (1944-27th September 1990)

He was an organist and musical director at St. Patrick’s Cathedral from 1970-1990.  He had succeeded the composer Pietro Yon and the Belgian virtuoso Charles Couboin and was very involved in the addition of the Trompette en Chamanade and the re-voicing of the reeds.

He was also the organist for the Metropolitan Opera and appeared on many recordings with groups that include Canadian Brass.

When The Papal Mass for Peace was held in the Yankee Stadium on 4th October 1965 with Pope Paul V1 being the first pontiff to ever visit the United States, he was principal organist.

In September 1990 he died at his home in Manhattan aged 56.
