Granat, Endre (1937-Present)

He is a violinist born in Miskolc, Hungary, who first picked up the violin when he was four years old, tutored by his father.  At age thirteen, he began his formal training at the Franz Liszt Academy with Zoltan Kodaly and Gyorgy Ligeti.  He continued his education at Basel Conservatory, Indiana University, and the University of Southern California, where he studied under the watchful eye of Jascha Heifetz.

Los Angeles turned out to be a good move for him, as he put himself in the place where the action was, whether it be working with some of the most renowned artists in the world, or picking up work as a session violinist and in some cases concertmaster on a variety of film soundtracks.  Some of the artists and groups he has worked with include Stanley Clarke, Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick, Jr., Will Downing, Earth, Wind & Fire, Everclear, Michael Feinstein, Amy Grant, Hanson, Faith Hill, K-Ci & JoJo, Carole King, Lisa Loeb, Ricky Martin, Bette Midler, Lionel Richie, Sister Hazel, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Carrie Underwood, Dionne Warwick, and Yanni.

His film credits include Angela’s Ashes, Blade Runner, The Bourne Identity, Dreamgirls, Hairspay (2007), Legally Blonde, Looney Tunes:  Back in Action, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Pirates of the Caribbean:  At Worlds End, The Simpsons Movie, and The Thin Red Line.

He has appeared on over 300 albums, and has served as concertmaster at the Academy Awards, the Emmy Awards, and the Grammy Awards.  He has worked with a who’s-who of conductors, including Sir Charles Mackerras, under whom he served as concertmaster with the Goteborg Symphony, Sir George Solti, George Szell, under whom he acted as assistant concertmaster with the Cleveland Orchestra, and Zubin Mehta.

He has also passed along his vast knowledge to another generation of musicians, having been Professor of Violin at California State University in Northridge, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Sweden.  He is currently Adjunct Professor of Strings/Harp and Violin at the USC Thornton School of Music.  A Fulbright Scholar and one-time Chairman of the Fulbright Committee.

Endre Granat has won the Grand Prix du Disque and Ysaye Medal, and is Laureate of the Queen Elizabeth International Competition.
