Hultmark, Carol

Violist who is not only a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, but a regular on the TV documentary about them entitled The Phil.  Carol’s misadventures have featured long commutes to get back home after a concert to cook her children porridge for breakfast, and true crime!  In one episode, her viola was stolen.

Off-screen, with viola in tow, she performed with pianist Adrienne Black and the Southern Sinfonia at the Corn Exchange in Newbury on 1st February 2002.

On 23rd April 2005, the Philharmonia teamed up with pianist Emanuel Ax and soprano Angela Denoke at Royal Festival Hall for an evening that included Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat, Op. 73” (“Emperor”), Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, and Richard Wagner’s “Prelude and Liebestod” from Tristan und Isolde.

Carol was one of a handful of Philharmonia musicians to grace the Italian Cultural Institute in London on 24thMay 2006.  The evening was hosted by actor Julian Curry and included a concert and wine tasting.

On 13th March 2009, the Philharmonia joined forces with pianist Mitsuko Uchida for an ambitious program that opened with Arnold Schoenberg’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 42” and closed with Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 9 in D major”.

Simon Trpceski was the guest soloist on 30th November 2009 when the Philharmonia sandwiched Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in B flat minor” in between Zoltan Kodaly’s “Danses de Galanta” and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

On 25th March 2010, Riccardo Muti directed the Philharmonia as Joshua Bell performed Beethoven’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major, Op. 61”.  After the intermission, the orchestra tackled Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55” (“Eroica”).

The Philharmonia did a brief tour of Italy in September 2010.  On 12th September, they appeared at Conservatorio di Milano in a program that comprised Bela Bartok’s The Miraculous Mandarin, Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14, and Mussorgsky’s “Una notte sul Monte Calvo”.  The next evening they were at Torino Auditorium, where they interpreted Jean Sibelius’s “Lemminkainen Suite, Op. 22” and Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted his own “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” with soloist Leila Josefowicz on 11thJanuary 2011.  The evening was rounded out by Bela Bartok’s “Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sz 106” and Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” and “Ma mere l’Oye (suite)”.

On 4th February 2011, Dmitrij Kitajenko wielded the baton as soloist Sergey Khachatryan tore through Dmiti Shostakovich’s “Concerto for Violin No. 1, Op. 77” and the orchestra offered up their rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “Sinfonia, Op. 58” (“Manfred”)

Recordings on which Carol appears include:  Johann Sebastian Bach’s chorale preludes, Komm, Gott, Schopfer, heiliger Geist, BWV 631 and Schmucke dich, o liebe Seele, BWV 654, and “Prelude and Fugue in E flat major, BWV 552” (“St. Anne”); Johannes Brahms’ “Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25”; and, Arnold Schoenberg’s “Concerto after Monn’s Concerto in D major for Harpsichord”, “Concerto, Op. 42”, “4 Lieder, Op. 22”, “Die Gluckliche Hand, Op. 18”, “Kammersymphonie No. 2, Op. 38”, Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5, and “Variations, Op. 31”.

In the mid-2010s she injured herself in a skiing accident which caused paralysis in her left arm before she started to make a slow recovery.

In the field of music education, Carol has served as Head of Strings at Bradfield College.
