Kriegler, Mitchell

Clarinetist who attended the Manhattan School of Music and studied under Robert Renino, Conrad Kuchay, and Charles Russo.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Bronx Arts Ensemble, the Bronx Chamber Orchestra, the Leonia Chamber Musicians Society, the Linden Woodwind Quintet, the New Music Consort, the New York City Ballet Orchestra, the New York City Opera, the New York Pops, the Quiet City Chamber Ensemble, the Robert DeCormier Ensemble, and the Sutton Ensemble.

On 29th and 30th August 1975, the New Music Consort gave a recital in the Summergarden at The Museum of Modern Art.  Their program included “Synchronisms No. 2” by Mario Davidovsky and “Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet” by Igor Stravinsky.

One of Mitchell’s earliest recordings, “Chamber Music No. 2” by Leonard Roseman, took place in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory of Music on 25th October 1976.

On 17th November 1978, he participated in the world premiere of the one-act chamber opera, Dr. Heidegger’s Fountain of Youth, by Jack Beeson and Sheldon Harnick, at the National Arts Club Gallery.

He was in the orchestra pit for the New York City Opera’s revival of The Sound of Music by Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers from 8th March through 22nd April 1990.

From 17th through 28th August 1993, he did same for their revival of The Student Prince by Dorothy Donnelly and Sigmund Romberg.

During the run, he had time to appear with the Bronx Arts Ensemble in McGinley Center on the Rose Hill Campus of Fordam University for a recital on 22nd August 1993.  It included the “Suite for Violin, Clarinet and Piano” by Darius Milhaud and the “Trio in B flat for Clarinet, Cello and Piano” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

On 11th December 2004, the Bronx Chamber Orchestra and New York Latvian Concert Choir joined forces for an advent concert that included the premieres of “Ziemas Svetku Kantate” by Pauls Dambis and “Ziemsvetki Jaunaja Pasaule” by Ugis Praulins.

Mitchell participated in the New York City Opera’s program, “Vox 2006:  Showcasing American Composers”, in May 2006.

In spring 2007, he took part in their 13-hour marathon, “Wall to Wall Opera”, at Symphony Space.

The Bronx Arts Ensemble appeared at The Riverdale Y on 26th October 2008 for a performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Overture on Hebrew Themes”.

On 22nd July 2010, the Sutton Ensemble played music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Igor Stravinsky at the SMA African Art Museum in Tenafly, New Jersey.

The CD release party for Quiet City by Christopher Brellochs and Paul Cohen took place at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, New York, on 17th September 2011.  The Quiet City Chamber Ensemble performed “Dialogue” by Jean-Marie Depelsenaire, “Quiet City” by Aaron Copland, and “Sound Moves Blues” by Robert Aldridge.

On 6th November 2011, the Leonia Chamber Musicians Society performed “Quatuor a vents for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon” by Jean Francaix in honour of the composer’s 100th anniversary at the Civil War Drill Hall Theatre in Leonia, New Jersey.

Mitchell took part in the Riverdale Festival of the Arts in a program entitled “Romantic Summer Breezes” in McGinley Center at Fordham University on 12th August 2012.  The program comprised the “Septet, Op. 20” of Ludwig van Beethoven and the “Nonett, Op. 139” of Josef Rheinberger.

On 4th November 2012, the Leonia Chamber Musicians Society appeared at All Saints Church for a performance of the “Quintet in E flat major for Piano and Wind Instruments” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In addition to his clarinet playing, he has also written several transcriptions for wind instruments, including wind versions of Johannes Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 5”, Scott Joplin’s “Stoptime Rag”, and Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedies”.
