Landauer, Timothy (1964-Present)

He is a cellist and teacher born in Shanghai, China to a family where his mother was a pianist, his father was the Associate Principal Cellist in the Shanghai Symphony and his grandfather was a German scientist who escaped the Nazis by going to China and then fleeing from there to Taiwan in 1949.

He first studied with his father and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before the family emigrated to the United States after the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976.  He then studied at the University of Southern California where he went on to attain his bachelor and master degrees.

As a professional musician he has performed as an orchestra member, Principal Cellist or guest soloist nationally and internationally with numerous orchestras that include the Beijing Symphony, the Gulbenkin Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Pacific Symphony, the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Santa Monica Symphony, the Shanghai Symphony, the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra.

Working with smaller ensembles he has also performed and recorded with a number of small ensembles such as the Dilijan Chamber Music Series, Rochelle Abramson Ensemble. Los Angeles Piano Trio and Quattro Celli.

He has also been active in the field of popular music and in the recording of more than 80 movie soundtracks that include titles such as Bourne Supremacy, Constantine, Conspiracy Theory, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Flight of the Phoenix, Hairspray, Ice Age, King Kong, Marley & Me, Master and Commander, Matrix Revolutions, Meet the Fockers, Peter Pan, Spider-Man 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wanted and War of the Worlds.

His CD output has been huge and a small selection of his vast number of recordings includes his own Saint-Saens, Dvorak: Concertos as well as My Kind of Christmas by Christina Aguilera, Forever Ray Charles by Ray Charles, White Christmas by Rosemary Clooney, To See You by Harry Connick Jr., Movie Album: As Time Goes By by Neil Diamond and Elmer Bernstein, Arnold Bax: Chamber Music for Harp by Marcia Dickstein, Black Knight by Randy Edelman, Breath of Heaven: A Christmas Collection by Vince Gill, Christmas to Remember by Amy Grant, “Blood on the Dance Floor” by Michael Jackson, Peachtree Road by Elton John, Cake and Pie by Lisa Loeb, Chamber Music of Tania Gabrielle French with the Los Angeles Piano Trio, Scores: Songs from Copacabana and Harmony by Barry Manilow, Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook by Bette Midler, Thanks for the Memory: Great American Songbook, Vol. 4 by Rod Stewart and Ultimate Mancini.

Winning numerous awards during his career he has won the American String Teacher’s National Solo Competition, the Samuel Applebaum Prize, the 1984 Arts Orange County “Outstanding Individual Artist Award”,  the Concert Arts Guild International New York Competition, the Hammerstein-Rostropovich Scholarship Award and the Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Cello Award to name a few.

In the world of musical education he was a lecturer at the University of Southern California from 1987 to 1990 and has taken many masterclasses in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
