Miranda, Tony (1919-11th November 2000)

French horn player, also credited with playing the flugelhorn and the trombone, born in New York City who graduated from Brooklyn College and was one of the first students to attend Tanglewood Berkshire Center, when it opened in 1940.

Military service interrupted his studies during World War II, and he was called away to Washington, D.C., where he became principal horn in the United States Army Band, eventually serving in France near the end of the war.

Upon returning to the States, he continued principal horn duties as a member of the New York City Opera, and played with the American Symphony (conducted by Arturo Toscanini), the Little Orchestra Society, Long Island Philharmonic, Musica Aeterna, and the New York Chamber Soloists.

He recorded with a who’s-who of classical, jazz, and pop music, including David Amram, The Beatles, Leonard Bernstein, Perry Como, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Percy Faith, Astrud Gilberto, Morton Gould, Donny Hathaway, Billie Holiday, Quincy Jones, Carmen McRae, and Frank Sinatra.  Tony also appears on the Philip Glass soundtracks of Powaqqatsi and The Thin Blue Line, and the original soundtrack of The Wiz.

He was affiliated with musicians’ union Local 802 for sixty years and the Morningside College Jazz Festival before passing away on 11th November 2000.
