Niesemann, Michael (11th October 1960-Present)

He is a classical and jazz oboist, saxophonist and university professor who studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance from 1979 to 1987.

He became a member of the ensemble Musica Antiqua Koln and remained with it for 10 years before co-founding the baroque ensemble Concerto Koln. He has also been Principal Oboist with the English Baroque Soloists and Orchester Revolutionnaire et Romantique. Alongside his classical performances he also regularly plays in various avant-garde and jazz projects and has been a member of Heavy Breeze Ensemble., The Blue Shroud Band and London Jazz Composers Orchestra.

Active in the recording studio, some of the albums he appears on include his own Virtuose Oboenkonzerte along with Living Toys by Thomas Ades, Lost Objects with Bang on a Can, The Blue Shroud with Blue Shroud, Une Soiree Vian by Denys Bouliane, Antonio Vivaldi: Concerti, Gluck: Echo & Narcisse, Portrait Eines Orchesters and Italian Concertos by Concerto Koln, JS Bach- 4 Ouverturen BWV 1066-1069, BWV 170, Concerti “Per L’Orchestre by Di Dresda”, Heinchen: Dresden Concerti, Telemann: Wind Concertos, Veracini: 5 Ouvertures and Telemann: Tafelmusik, Wassermusik, Konzerte by Musica Antiqua Koln and Beethoven: Symphonies Nos 5 & 7 – Live at Carnegie Hall with Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique along with many others.

In the field of musical education he first taught at the Cologne University of Music and Dance from 1993 and in 2004 was appointed Professor for Baroque Oboe at the University of Music in Wurzburg. 2007 saw him becoming Professor for Oboes at Essen’s Folkwang University of the Arts.

Outside of his interests in music he is a keen photographer.
