Orlando, Anthony

He is a percussionist born in Reading, Pennsylvania who began learning percussion when he was 8 years old and adding the cello fora three year period from 9 to 12.  In 1968 he was an associate fellow at Tanglewood’s Berkshire Music Festival and the following year his studies at Philadelphia Music Academy earned him his Bachelor of Music degree. His post-graduate studies were taken with the former Philadelphia Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Principal Timpani Fred Hinger.

He went on to perform as Principal Percussion with orchestras that include the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, the Lancaster Symphony, the Opera Company of Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra and the Trenton Symphony.  He became a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1972 where he is Associate Principal Percussion.

Also interested in the performance of new music he is a member of Network for New Music.

Recordings he has performed on include Carol by The American Boychoir, I Hear the Mermaids Singing by Tina Davidson, String Quartet; Starscape; Sonata; Four Songs After Rexroth by Jan Krzywicki, Movement in Time by Don Liuzzi, Dream Journal by Network for New Music, Celebrations: Concerto for Piano/Concerto for Viola/Celebrations for 2 Pianos & Percussion by Orchestra 2001, Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra, Zones by POPG and 20th Century Voices in America by various artists.

In the field of musical education he has been a faculty member of the New School of Music and the University of the Arts.  He has given master classes and clinics at several universities and colleges and each year give four master classes at Rowan University.
