Violist from South Bend, Indiana, who grew up in Japan and got some early violin lessons from her mom. She attended the Interlochen Arts Academy, Juilliard and Oberlin Conservatory, where she switched to viola. Her teachers included Hsin-Yun Huang, Benny Kim, Karen Tuttle, Almita Vamos and Roland Vamos.
On 30th March 2005, she and bass clarinetist Carol McGonnell and flautist Ulla Suokko gave the world premiere of “Sequence Probable” by Brahim Kerkour at Merkin Hall in New York City.
She became a member of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in 2007. Other groups with whom she has worked include Accordo, the Andros String Quartet, the Aspen Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cultures in Harmony, the DaCapo Chamber Players, the East Coast Chamber Orchestra, the International Contemporary Ensemble, the IRIS Orchestra, the Musicians from Marlboro, the New York Philharmonic and the Rothko Quartet.
On 27th July 2008, she and violinists Benjamin Beilman and David Bowlin, cellist Judith Serkin and pianist Mitsuko Uchida interpreted the “Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 81” by Antonin Dvorak at the Marlboro Music Festival.
Accordo appeared at the Southern Theater on 20th & 22nd September 2009 when they offered up Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Divertimento in E flat major, K. 563”, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Sonata in C major, Op. 55” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Quartet No. 3 in F major, Op. 73”.
On 5th April 2011, the Musicians from Marlboro entertained at Le Petit Trianon in San Jose, California. Their program comprised “Octet in E flat major, Op. 20” by Felix Mendelssohn, “String Quartet No. 1” (“Kreutzer Sonata”) by Leos Janacek and “String Quintet in E flat major, K. 614” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The International Contemporary Ensemble performed works by Sofia Gubaidulina in Miller Theater at Columbia University on 9th February 2013. The evening included “Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings”, “Concordanza”, “Meditation on the Bach Chorale ‘Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit’” and “Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello”.
Recordings on which Maiya appears include Arlene Sierra Vol. 1 and John Adams: Son of Chamber Symphony/String Quartet with the International Contemporary Ensemble.
