Paradise, Timothy

Clarinetist who attended Pomona College, Staatliche Hochschule and Yale University and studied with Kalman Bloch and Yona Ettlinger.

In 1977, he became the principal clarinet of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  Other groups with whom he has worked include the Bakken Trio and the Santa Fe Opera.

He collaborated with Aaron Copland on a transcription of the American master’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano” and delivered the world premiere with the composer conducting the SPCO in 1978.  The sheet music is available through Boosey & Hawkes, J.W. Pepper and sheetmusic.com.

In 1996, the SPCO performed live in Tokyo, Japan.  The concert, which has been immortalized on CD, included Copland’s “Appalachian Spring Suite” and “Hoedown” from Rodeo, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Oboe Concerto in C, K. 314” and Igor Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite”.

The SPCO offered up Edvard Grieg’s “Holberg Suite, Op. 40” in February 2002.

On 19th October 2003, Minnesota Public Radio aired Timothy’s performance of Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto in A, K. 622” with the SPCO, which was recorded in September 2003.

They broadcast his November 2003 duo with John Jensen, “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by William Alwyn, on 21st March 2004.

On 11th March 2006, he and SPCO principal flautist Julia Bogorad interpreted Elliott Carter’s “Esprit rude/Esprit doux”.  The same weekend found him performing Carter’s “Clarinet Concerto” with the SPCO at the University of Minnesota.

The SPCO gave a concert that featured “Concert Romanesc” by Gyorgy Ligeti, “The Devil’s Trill” by Giuseppe Tartini, “Serenade in D minor for Winds, Op. 44” by Antonin Dvorak and “Suite from Zoroastre” by Jean-Philippe Rameau in May 2008.

In October 2009, Timothy was the featured soloist when the SPCO included “Night Prayers for Clarinet, Strings and Pre-Recorded Sound” by Giya Kancheli in their programs at Ordway Center and Ted Mann Concert Hall.

He and Julia reprised Carter’s “Esprit rude/Esprit doux” and he also soloed on Mozart’s “Quintet in A for Clarinet, Two Violins and Viola at the SPCO Center Music Room on 5th December 2010.  The recital was broadcast by MPR on 28th March 2011.

In February 2012, the SPCO presented Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Violin Concerto”, with soloist Steven Copes, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Overture on Hebrew Themes” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a”.
