Parkin, Erne (19??-27th July 2009)

Guitarist and singer-songwriter from northeastern England who was a member of the Medium Wave Band, which evolved into Avalon. They released albums such as Heavy Hearts and Rocky Roads, and Erne wrote much of the material therein.

In 2008, he helped launch Lentfest for the Archdiocese of Glasgow Arts Project. This put to work his talents of musical direction and production in presentations such as Francis—The Verdict, Life Up the Raw, Paul and Pilgrim.

Life Up the Raw was mounted in Glasgow in October 2008 and at Fraser Centre in Milngavie on 6^th December 2008.

At Lentfest 2009, AGAP Theatre presented Stephen Callaghan’s stage play Paul, a multimedia production about St. Paul of Tarsus, with incidental music and songs penned by Erne.

Erne passed away at Golden Jubilee Hospital on 27^th July 2009. His life was commemorated at Milngavie Town Hall in January 2010. On 8^th October 2011, the Erne Parkin Award was unveiled at the town hall in a charitable event that benefited one of his favourite causes, The Suzy Fund. The Suzy Fund assists in African famine relief. The Milngavie Herald has also announced a perennial Erne Parkin concert.

In addition to his music-making and production work, Erne was known for the Mugdock Music Festival and his annual New Year’s party. He also ran Milngavie FC for a time, and his own company, Erne Parkin Creative Consultancy Ltd.
