He is a double bassist and author who started learning the double bass when he was 11 years old. He went on to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
He went on to become a member of the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Mexico’s Orquesta Sinfonica de Veracruz. In 1986 he joined The Philadelphia Orchestra.
Recordings he has performed on include Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.
Outside of his work with the orchestra he has intensively researched and written about historical Italian instruments from the 16th century to present and has been published in both Strings and Strad magazines. He has co-authored catalogues of exhibitions commemorating Guarneri “del Gesu” and published several books, with his first being Cremonese Double Basses in 1992. He is the co-author of The Stradiveri Legacy and The Late Cremonese Violin Makers.
He is an Associate member of the American Federation of Violin and Bowmakers and has been a member of the Scientific Committees of the Ente Triennale which governs the annual exhibitions of rare bowed instruments in Cremona, Italy. He has given several presentations and lectures in London and America and acts as an expert consultant.
In the field of musical education he has taught students double bass in Delaware Valley and given master classes.
