Rowe, Elizabeth

Flautist from Eugene, Oregon, who started playing at seven years of age and attended the Tanglewood Music Center and the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

Groups with whom she has worked include the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Classical Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and the Metropolis Winds, which she co-founded.

In 1996, she got her first taste of performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a principal when Seiji Ozawa conducted Peter Grimes, an opera composed by Benjamin Britten.

She won first prize in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition in 2000.  In 2002, she released a videotape entitled Ultimate Beginner Series – Flute, Volume 1.  She became Principal Flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2004.  In 2005, she joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music.

She and Ann Hobson Pilot were the soloists in April 2005 with the Boston Classical Orchestra when they performed “Concerto for Flute & Harp” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In June 2009, she participated in Beyond the Masterclass Flute Week, the brainchild of her USC instructor Jim Walker, at the Colburn School of Performing Arts.  She gave a masterclass at the Boston Flute Academy on 8th November 2009.

In February 2010, she made her solo debut at Symphony Hall when the Boston Symphony Orchestra offered up the American premiere of “Flute Concerto” by Elliott Carter.  Their Latin-flavoured program in August 2010 featured Elizabeth as the soloist on Gabriela Lena Frank’s “Illapa, a Tone Poem for Flute and Orchestra”.

On 23rd January 2011, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players appeared at Jordan Hall in a recital of L’Historie du soldat by Igor Stravinsky and “Quintet in E flat for Piano and Winds, K. 452”.  Elizabeth and Jonathan Bass opened the affair with the “Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 23” of Lowell Liebermann.

In the last week of January and first week of February 2011, she and John Ferrillo performed Gyorgy Ligeti’s “Double Concerto for Flute, Oboe and Orchestra” with the BSO.

On 27th March 2011, she returned to the Boston Flute Academy for another masterclass.  She did the same at the College of Saint Rose as part of their Flute Day on 10th April 2011.

On 16th October 2011, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players presented an afternoon of music by Czech composers, including “Mladi” by Leos Janacek, “Serenade for Strings, Op. 22” by Antonin Dvorak, and “Sextet for Piano and Winds” by Bohuslav Martinu.  Elizabeth reprised Elliott Carter’s “Flute Concerto” with the Boston Symphony Orchestra on 6th December 2011.

On 11th December 2011, she gave another masterclass in Thayer Hall at The Colburn School of Performing Arts.  She did likewise at the Boston Flute Academy on 8th January 2012.

On 22nd January 2012, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players took the stage at Jordan Hall in a concert of “Serenade in D for Flute, Violin and Viola, Op. 25” by Ludwig van Beethoven, “Serenade No. 1” by Johannes Brahms and arranged by Jorge Rotter, and “Serenade No. 12 in C minor for Winds, K. 388” by Mozart.

In the field of music education, she has served as a faculty member and guest artist for the National Orchestral Institute, New World Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, and the University of Maryland Peabody Conservatory of Music.

Recordings on which she has appeared include the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Grammy-winning Daphnis et Chloe, and the Boston Symphony Chamber Players’ Mozart:  Chamber Music for Winds and Strings and Profanes et Sacrees:  20th-Century Chamber Music.
