Schumitzky, Robert

Violinist from St. Louis, Missouri, who started his studies at seven years of age and enrolled the St. Louis Conservatory of Music in 1971. From 1978 to 1979, he attended the Meadowmount School, where he studied under the watchful eyes of Ivan Galamian and Sally Thomas. His other teachers included Jacques Israelievitch, Max Rabinovitsj, and Fryderyk Sadowski. He also took master classes with Josef Gingold, Szymon Goldberg, Alexander Schneider, and Henryk Szeryng. He furthered his education at Juilliard in 1977 and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Music degree. Then, he moved back to St. Louis and earned his Master’s at the aforementioned St. Louis Conservatory.

In 1973, he became concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, a position he held until 1980. Other groups with whom he has worked comprise the Aviara Trio, Breene-Irawati Duo, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Highland String Quartet, the Highland Trio, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Opera Pacific Orchestra, Orchestra Nova, the Pacific Chorale, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Conservatory Orchestra, the St. Louis Conservatory String Ensemble, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, and the San Diego Symphony.

On 9th July 1991, he and fellow PSO members, violist Craig Gibson, cellist Andrew Honea and violinist Rachel Robinson, participated in the Seal Beach Festival. Their program consisted of the “American” quartet by Antonin Dvorak, “Quartet in D minor, K. 173” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the “Al Santo Sepolcro” sonata by Antonio Vivaldi.

He toured Japan three times with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and John Mauceri, in 1994, 1996 and 1998. In March 2006, he toured Austria and Germany with the PSO. Back home in San Diego, he joined forces with the Breene-Irawati Duo at Newport Center United Methodist Church for the “Ghost” trio of Ludwig van Beethoven and “Piano Trio No. 1” of Felix Mendelssohn.

The Highland Trio opened the High Desert Chamber Music season with “String Quartet No 7 in F major” (“Razumovsky”) and “String Trio No. 3” by Beethoven, and “Serenade in C major” by Ernst von Dohnanyi, in September 2008.

In November 2010, Orchestra Nova interpreted both Astor Piazzolla’s and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons on a mini-tour of La Jolla, San Diego, and Sorrento Valley.

The Pacific Chorale and PSO celebrated the fortieth anniversary of conductor John Alexander on 6^th November 2011 with music of Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, Gerard Finzi, and Jake Heggie.

Recording on which Robert appears include the soundtrack of the short film, Bird in a Cage, Future Selves by Transfer, Gypsy by Bette Midler, Pardon My English by George and Ira Gershwin, Triumph & Symphony by Anna Madorsky, and When Dreams Become Reality by Thieves & Liars.

In the field of music education, he has instructed advanced students for at least two decades.
