Taylor, John

Bassist and double bassist from Yorkshire, England, who took his formal studies at the Banff Centre School of Music, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the University of Toronto.

In 1983, he joined the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and has served as assistant principal bass ever since.  He appeared as a member of the Edmonton Wind Ensemble on their 1997 album, Snake Fence Country.

Other classical music groups with which he has performed include the Canadian Opera Company, the Hamilton Philharmonic, New Music in Toronto, Orchestra London Canada, the Thunder Bay Symphony, and the Toronto Symphony.

He is also an acclaimed jazz musician, and has become a mainstay at the Yardbird Jazz Festival.  Some of the ensembles he has lent his bass lines to include the Andrew Glover Sextet, the Bobby Cairns Quartet, the Chandelle Rimmer Quintet, the Dianne Donovan Quintet, the Jim Head Quartet, the P.J. Perry Quintet, the Sandro Dominelli Sextet, the Steve Slagle Quartet, and the Strathcona String Quartet.

Recordings on which he appears comprise Faith in You by Dino Dominelli, Kingley Crossing by James Clarke, and Melodia and Obsession by Kent Sangster’s Obsessions Octet.

In the field of music education, he heads the MacEwan Bass Department, has taught at Alberta College, and has been giving private lessons for the better part of two decades.
