Wright, Tom (1950-Present)

He is a violist, guitarist and mandolin player born in Washington D.C. who began learning the violin as a child and studied at the Oberlin College Conservatory before concentrating on rock music as a guitarist during the 1970s. During that time he performed with the group Grits.

He returned his sights on working as a classical musician and in 1980 became Principal Viola at the Kennedy Center Opera. He remained there for a year before becoming a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1981. He stayed with the orchestra for 33 years until retiring in 2014.

He is also a jazz musician who has performed in Tom Wright’s Cat and Mouse Quartet.

Recordings he has performed on include his own Destination and Tailwind, Notes from the Journey by Tom Wright’s Cat and Mouse Quartet, Corigliano: Symphony No. 1, Wagner: Overtures and Preludes and Brahms: Violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, High Voltage by Common Ground, As the World Grits and Rare Birds by Grits, One of These Days by The John Wells Delegation and Third Phonograph Album by The Wright Brothers Overland Stage Company.

Outside of music he is a semi-professional astronomer and has been the designer of telescope mounts that have been a feature by a national publication.
