Xue Wei (1963-Present)

He is a violinist born in China who started to study the violin when he was 8 years old and became a student at the music middle school that is affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory when he was 14.  Five years later he started his studies at the Central Conservatory.

Entering many competitions during his student years he won the China National Violin Competition in 1981, the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition the following year and in 1983 was a winner at the Japan International Music Competition.   He also won a silver medal at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition.

In 1985 he began studies at the Guildhall School of Music after receiving sponsorship and being assisted by the Lord Mayor of London. The following year, in 1986, he was voted the LPO/Pioneer UK Young Soloist of the Year.

He has made several recordings with his Strauss and Headington Violin Concertos winning a Brit Award nomination.  Other albums he is the featured primary artist on include Salut D’AmorSir Edward Elgar: Piano Quintet/Spanish Lady.Serenade/La Capricieuse with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, The Schubert Ensemble and The Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Carmen Fantasy with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Brahms/Mendelssohn – Violin Concertos with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Violin Virtuoso with Pamela Nicholson, Tchaikovsky: Violin Concertos with the Philharmonia, Xue Plays Violin with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto/Piano Quartet No. 2/String Quartet No. 1 with The Schubert Ensemble and Vellinger Quartet.

In the field of musical education he took on a position at the Royal School of Music where he became the first Chinese professor as well as the youngest professor at only 26 years old in 1989.
