Moroder, Giorgio (26th April 1940-Present)

He is a synthesiser player, producer and songwriter born Giovanni Giorgio Moroder in Ortisei, Italy, who began his career in the early 1970s by performing in several bands.

He saw several self-penned hits including “Chase”, “Son of My Father” and “From Here to Eternity”.  Occasionally going under the name Munich Machine, he released three albums under that name in the late 70s as well as releasing one under his own name called E=MC2.

He has worked in collaboration with the lyricist Bellotte and with the singer Phil Oakey from The Human League, releasing an album together in 1985, Harold Faltermeyer and Tom Whitlock.

As a film composer he composed the scores for countless movies including Midnight Express, which produced the hit song “Chase” and won an Academy Award, Top Gun, which won an Academy Award and produced the hit song “Take My Breath Away” sung by Berlin, American Gigolo, Flashdance which won an Academy Award, Electric Dreams and Scarface. He has also restored and edited the silent film Metropolis and included a soundtrack by popular artists on the 1980s.

Other notable songs are his official themes for the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, his synthesiser performance on Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, “Love to Love You Baby” and “Hot Stuff”, and his performances on the hit songs “Flashdance (What a Feeling)”, “Putting Out the Fire”, “Danger Zone” and “Call Me”.

Involved in computer enhanced photography and imagery, he has produced images of his wife and friends such as Donna Summer and had had an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in Bolzano, Italy.  Broadening his horizons even further he worked on the design and production of the Citeza-Moroder Italian sports car.

A recipient of over 100 gold and platinum discs and three Grammy Awards, he was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and in 2005 the President of the Italian Republic made him Commendatore.
