American Boychoir (aka American Boy’s Choir)

This highly acclaimed boy’s choir was founded in 1937 when it was situated at Columbus, Ohio.  Thirteen years later, in 1950, the choir re-located to Princeton, New Jersey, where they have been based ever since.

Since they began performing they have become nationally and internationally renowned through their many concert tours.  They have given performances that include premieres, where there has been the whole choir or individual soloists, with many of the top American orchestras with just a few of them including the American Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Berkshire Music Festival, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cathedral Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Princeton Chamber Symphony and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.  Other international orchestras they have performed with include Royal Concertgebouw, The Staatskapelle Berlin, the Vienna Festival Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic.

Besides accompanying orchestras alone, they have performed with many other artists that include Kathleen Battle, Beyonce, k.d. Lang, James Levine, Wynton Marsalis, AlanisMorrisette, Sir Paul McCartney, Jessye Norman, Twile Paris, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor to name just a few.

The choir is currently led by Fernando Malvar-Ruiz who is their Litton-Lodal Music Director.  Over the years they have also been led by many conductors that include Pierre Boulez, Donald Bryant, Robert DeCormier, Charles Dutoit, Donald Hanson, John Kuzma, James Levine, James Litton, Vincent Metallo, Kurt Masur and Andre Previn.

The choir have made appearances on many television and radio broadcasts and no strangers to the studio they have made in excess forty five recordings.  Some of these many recordings include Arrigo Boito Mephistofele “Prologue”, Leonard Bernstein: KaddishSymphony, Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, Dixit Dominus, Family Christmas Favorites, Go West Young Man, Holy Innocents, Hymnody of Earth, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, The Lord’s Prayer; O Holy Night, Lost in the Stars, Felix Mendelssohn: Elijah, Messiah, On Christmas Day, Singing for the Joy of It and Trumpets Sound Voices Ring and the soundtracks to Interview with a Vampire, In Search of Angels and Wide Awake.

In the field of musical education they work with countless communities and numerous schools in their outreach Arts in Education program.  Their Resident Training Choir has also been attending schools in South Jersey in conjunction with the Newark Boys Chorus Training Choir.
