Flashcubes, The

This 4-piece band started out in Syracuse, New York in 1977 and comprised the  guitarists Arty Lenin and Paul Armstrong, the bassist Gary Frenay and the drummer Tommy Allen.  That same year they played their first gig at the Brookside.

They went on to perform in shows in states such as New York, Massachusetts and Michigan with artists that included Joe Jackson, The Jam, The Police and The Ramones.

By 1978 they had their own label Northside Records and released the singles “Christi Girl” and “Wait Till Next Week” and in 1979 the guitarist  Mick Walker replaced Paul Armstrong.

The band broke up in 1980 and it was 13 years before they reformed, with their original line-up after they began to be recognised again by a larger audience and their song “Christi Girl” was include on a power pop anthology CD.  They have since toured Japan twice, played at several pop festivals and released 6 CDs such as Cellarful of Boys, Brilliant and Raw Power Pop – The Flashcubes Live in Japan.  They have also recorded and released many singles that include “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, “Get the Message”, “Get Up and Go” and “Come Out and Play”.

In 2013 the album Sportin’ Wind won a SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Awards) for Best Rock Album and in 2014 they were inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Awards Hall of Fame.  They have also become a member of the Power Pop Hall of Fame in 2019.
