They are a German pop band created in 1979 specifically for the Eurovision Song Contest and were given the same name as the title of the song they were singing, “Genghis Khan”.
The band achieved a wide popularity throughout Europe and Japan with hit songs such as “Moskau” and became the most commercially successful German group. Their songs often followed the theme of historical figures and were performed as a theatrical show.
They broke up around 1985 but have received a recent revival on the internet. Their song “Moskau” was used as the theme song for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow even though West Germany boycotted the games.
They reformed in 2005 and performed in Moscow in October of that year. In July 2006 they appeared, by invitation, at the celebrations of the 800th centenary of Genghis Kahn in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.
