Tag Team

Active from 1993 to 1995, Steve Gibson aka Steve RollN and Cecil Glenn aka DC the Brain Supreme, were the popular rap/hip-hop/bass duo known as Tag Team which hailed from Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1993 they released their debut single “Whoomp! (There It Is)” which went to No. 1 on the US R&B chart, No. 2 on the Billboard chart, No.19 on the Australian Chart and No. 34 in the UK, reaching 4xplatinum status.  Soon after they released their debut album Whoomp There It Is: The Album which brought them success on the Billboard album charts.

After their initial success with their first single, they released several remakes of the hit under different guises.  First it was “Addams Family (Whoomp!)” in 1994 which managed to get to No. 84 on the Billboard chart and No. 53 in the UK.  That same year a remix of “Whoomp! (There It Is)” was issued, which reached No. 48 on the UK chart and was followed by “Whoomp! (There It Went)” which featured the Disney characters Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy.

Sticking very much to single releases rather than having a high album output, the duo issued further songs such as “Here It Is, Bam!”, “Pig Power” and “U Go Girl”.

In 1995 they released their album Audio Entertainment which produced the single “FunkeySituation” which did not reach the same heights as their success with the various versions of “Whoomp! There It Is”.

Into the 2000s and their popular hit was once again in the fray when a further re-mix was re-released and the compilation The Best of Tag Team was issued.

The video for “Whoomp! (There It Is)” received some notoriety in 2010 when the New York blog known as Gawker claimed that President Barack Obama may have made an appearance in the original 1993 video.  Gawker has since recognised that it wasn’t him.

Although their success came from one particular hit, Tag Team are heard regularly on various CD compilations and have had their music used for several TV shows and the soundtracks of the movies Addams Family Values, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Blankman, D2 The Mighty Ducks, Elf and Gordy among others.
