The conductor John Oliver, who was the Vocal and Choral Activities Director at the Tanglewood Music Center founded this choir in 1970. They are a chorus of volunteers who were originally established to accompany the Boston Symphony and Pops orchestras in their summer concerts and their membership currently runs at around 250 artists.
Internationally known, they have sung at the 1994 and 1998 Olympic Games opening and closing festivals as well as making a tour to Japan and Hong Kong in 1994, which was their first overseas appointment.
Making numerous recordings with the Boston orchestras, they have been heard as a virtual backing group on a tour by James Taylor, whose wife is a member, appeared on the TV show A Faust Symphony and they have also been heard on the soundtracks of the movies Mystic River and Saving Private Ryan.
