Dame Get Up and Bake Your Pies

(Traditional English)

This Christmas song is a nursery rhyme that was first published in 1834 in a collection of songs, legends and ballads from the County of Durham in Northern England known as The Bishoprick Garland.  It was compiled and edited by the antiquary and soldier Sir Cuthbert Sharp.

The work was later put together in a collection of “carols and poems from the 15th century to present time” entitled A Christmas Garland by A.H. Bullen.  It was published in 1885 with the title changed in this publication to “Maids Get Up and Bake Your Pies”.

The rhyme has been arranged to music on several occasions and has been recorded by several artists including  John Langstaff,  Wally Whyton, The Broadside Band, The Robert DeCormier Singers and the Gregg Smith Singers along with numerous others.
