Dancing in the City

(Kit Hain/Julian Marshall)

Julian Marshall wrote the initial music for this song, and after he played some chords on the piano for Kit Hain to hear it evolved into the song we know today.  She came up with the words and the tune and said that even though it can be taken as “Simply a song about dancing in the city, we feel there’s a certain element of mystery about it”.  Peter Van Hook who provided what was seen as the essential basis of the song performed the drumming on the song.

Often seen as a summer record it was actually written in February and the original version lasted for eight minutes.  The song reached No. 3 in the UK chart in 1978 and appears on the album Free Ride.
