Darknesse Visible

(Thomas Ades)

This is a solo piano work, composed in 1992 by Thomas Ades, that was influenced by the John Dowland lute song “Darknesse Let Mee Dwell” written in 1619.  The piece is about grief and the title also refers to where “Satan dwells in an eternity of mourning” in Milton’s Paradise Lost.  According to the composer “No notes have been added, indeed some have been removed.”
