El Puerto (Isaac Albeniz)

(Isaac Albeniz)

This is the second and shortest piece in Book One of the work Iberia.  The inspiration for it came from the town of Santa Maria which is on the Bay of Cadiz, Spain.  It was composed for piano in a way where the sound of the guitar is emulated and in the style of the lively dance called the Zapateado which requires intricate footwork when it is performed.  It has been noted that the influences of a French style, and in particular Debussy, are present in the “harmonic subtlety” of this piece.
