Hasta Manana

(Benny Andersson/Bjorn Ulvaeus/Stig Anderson)

Translated as “see you tomorrow” in Spanish, this song was initially written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson with the working title “Who’s Gonna Love You” and considered to be used for the Melodifestivalen prior to the 1974 Eurovision song contest.  As it was, they decided on using “Waterloo” in the competitions instead, which would be the beginning of the successful international career for ABBA.   The song appears on the ABBA album Waterloo and was released as a single by ABBA in five countries: Sweden, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Italy, making the Top 30 in each, with the lead vocals performed by Agnetha Faltskog.  It would be recorded in Swedish on the same day, 18th December 1973, by the singer Lena Andersson who was a regular backing singer for ABBA.

In 1977 it was covered by Debby Boone on the B-Side of her “You Light Up My Life” which topped the US Billboard chart for 10 weeks and appeared on her album of the same name.  Other artists that have recorded it are Schytts and the group Vikingarna reached the Swedish chart with it in 1989.
