La Jolie Fille de Gand (The Fair Maiden of Gand)

(Adolphe Charles Adam)

This ballet was written by Adolphe Charles Adam in 1842 and has a brief introduction followed by three acts.

The tale is set in Ghent where Beatrix, the daughter of a local goldsmith, is set to marry her cousin Benedict.  Meanwhile, the Marquis de San Lucar lavishes attention on her and seduces and abducts her.  Beatrix realizes the error of what she has done and after an extended dream sequence she returns and prepares to marry Benedict.

There are many nationalistic dances and waltzes included in the ballet as well as the use of horn fanfares as introductions to several scenes.
