Sheik of Chicago

(Tom Wheeler)

Written by Tom Wheeler, this title track from Joe Stampley’s 1976 album is a paean to Chuck Berry, complete with Berry-like guitar riffs and melody.  It references at least three of the legendary rocker’s songs:  “Johnny B. Goode”, “Promised Land”, and “Roll over Beethoven”.  Obviously, this country-rocker is more rock than country, but it did enjoy a brief run on the country chart, and the album went to #38.  It also appears on Joe Stampley’s Greatest Hits.
