Waltzing Cat, The

(Leroy Anderson)

This song was written and finalised by Leroy Anderson in February 1950 and premiered by him when he recorded it for Decca in 1951.  The composer wrote the piece wanting to put to music what he was imagining when he thought of “something like Puss in Boots at a fancy dress ball”.  The strings in the orchestra emanate the sounds of a cat’s meow as you imagine a “cat like a stately cavalier” gracefully dancing to a waltz-like melody. The piece had words added to it in 1951 by the lyricist Mitchell Parish.
